IT infrastructure virtualisation

What is IT infrastructure virtualisation?

With the Arrival of Intel E7 Processors for servers it seems that every business must embrace now, the it infrastructure virtualisation technology from VMware or Microsoft Hyper V, because it is no long possible to justify the use of a server running the above processors for one of two applications. Many  businesses do not know what is virtualisation, it is the process of taking a physical server then partition its resources, to create logical servers using  software from companies like Microsoft or VMware.  The video tutorial below will explain you how this is done using VMware. VMware has been around since 2000, this company started the concept of virtual servers and virtual machines (VM) and the rest of the industry IT  just followed them.

Before we start lets look at the reason why virtualisation is inevitable for every business. Every year, it is not uncommon to see a desktop that has a E series quad core with 12Gb of memory and SSD drive for the OS to boot up therefore you can see simple desktop setup, you can not longer justify to the business to fact one user can use a machine of such power with ordinary applications like words or excel. As a result of these powerful desktop companies are implemented virtualisation not only at the servers level but also at the desktop level.

Most of magazine talk just about dual core, but we use Intel i-7 processors in all our desktops, these machines can run at a very high speed with 20 applications running in parallel on each desktop, but any medium users use around 6 to 7 applications at any time. So you can see why it is important to virtualise all the powerful machines in your company to achieve a real saving for your business. You may ask us, what was the point of buying machines that runs i-7 processor? It is very simple, with the arrival of the 1st true main 64 bit operating system which is Windows 7, you need a processor that can runs in a native 64 bits mode. We also see the real benefit in this investment, we waste less time waiting for one application when trying to use another application. Moreover we cannot buy a traditional dual core when we know that in three to four years we need to change our machines again.

There are many forums that discuss the benefit of dual core from both Intel and AMD, and that a user just need a dual core rather than a Quad core, but we believe because of the price difference between a Dual core and Quad core. It is better to invest in technology that will last longer. Although older computer systems might not have the right architecture to simply accept these dual processors, the more recent types of computer can certainly adjust to this innovation. We know that many computer suppliers are still selling non Dual core processors, however we advice you not to invest in this technology, because you will be wasting your money and these machines will not allow you to virtualise your infrastructure servers and desktop. It will not save you money on both electricity and systems cost.

The aim of the Intel and AMD which are producing these Dual and Quad core processors systems is to allow systems that may perform the work on the very best cost for customers. Therefore when looking for powerful machines you need to keep a simple thought during your selection process. What is the best system and the real value for money for my business? This is big question you must ask at all time, can I virtualise the machine that we just purchased? With this question in mind you can go and buy systems that will save you money in future on both electricity power and cooling in your office environment. There is only one way forward in the technology at the moment it is to virtualise both desktops and servers and help businesses to save money by deploying less servers, more powerful servers and desktops that have been design to be very efficient on power usage. Therefore you will save a fortune on your electricity bill because you will use less power and less cooling. You must be asking how can be? because the logic is when a server is more powerful it will use more electricity, right? the answer is simple, we know systems that have been designed to be very powerful and power efficient and they are ideal for your IT infrastructure virtualisation. Therefore the secret of reducing your cost while optimising your IT infrastructure is to virtualize as many powerful servers as possible.
